Pediatric and OB-GYN Resident Research

Patrick Kenney MD; Resident; Department of Medicine; Medicine Pediatrics; Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo; 2019.

Patrick O. Kenney, MD, center, started as a UB resident in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and is now a physician-scientist with the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Medicine.

Our pediatric and OB-GYN residency programs both have rigorous research expectations and requirements. In both programs, you will gain practical experience in study design, implementation and communication of results as well as experience with the regulatory processes governing research studies.

Training the Next Generation of Physician Scientists

At the Child and Maternal Health Research Institute (CMHRI), we are deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of physician-scientists through immersive, mentored research experiences. Our resident training initiatives provide hands-on opportunities in clinical, translational, and population health research focused on pediatrics, maternal health, and health equity.

Residents engage in structured programs that develop critical skills in study design, grant writing, data analysis, and publication. Trainees benefit from personalized mentorship by nationally recognized faculty and are integrated into interdisciplinary research teams tackling urgent health challenges. These experiences not only prepare residents for competitive fellowships and academic careers but also strengthen the pipeline of clinician-investigators and the future of maternal and child health innovation.

Advocacy Track – Pediatric Residency Program

The Advocacy Track is a longitudinal experience for pediatric residents committed to making a meaningful impact on child health through community engagement. Residents identify a specific public health issue, explore evidence-based solutions, and partner with community-based organizations (CBOs) to implement and evaluate a sustainable advocacy project.

Participants typically begin in program year 2 (PGY-2) and dedicate time during their +1 clinic weeks to advance their projects. Residents meet regularly with mentors, collaborate with CBOs, and present their work at the annual Community Health & Advocacy Conference. The track fosters leadership in health equity, social determinants of health, and systems-level change in pediatrics.
