Internship and Research

Our BTE program expends internship and research opportunities to prepare you for lifelong participation in biotechnical academic and industrial research.

Nikita Chawla (Bayer Pharmaceuticals at Texas, Summer 2021)

The internship gave me a great insight on how a big pharmaceutical company functions and the different departments at the company, along with helping me make valuable professional connections. This experience enables me to co-relate the concepts I learned in the classroom to real industry problems to be able to find solutions quickly. I am very grateful to all the professors at UB and my mentor at Bayer for helping me get this amazing opportunity to intern with Bayer.

Abigail Gilliam (Frontier Science at Buffalo, Summer 2021).

Although I had no experience in clinical data management, I was prompted to engage with every department which motivated me to learn and grow as an individual in the Biotechnology field. I was immersed in presentations from various departments and worked one on one with the quality assurance team. By the end of the internship, I had the opportunity to present to the director of Frontier Science which strengthened my public speaking skills. This internship as a whole has made an impact in my life by opening up new avenues for my future endeavors

Alphonse N. Dimeck (Roswell Park Summer Program at Buffalo, 2021)

During this Summer Program, I participated in a research project,  “the affects of Androgen Deprivation Therapy on prostate cancer patients” by measuring the levels of catabolic myokines, GDF11 and Myostatin. Many of the techniques I used in my research were taught to me through the UB Biotechnology program such as immunoblots, ELISA assays, and general laboratory techniques and processes. I had the opportunity to present my work in the forms of poster presentations and research symposiums. The skills I learned from the internships and the department prepared me to apply for Ph.D. programs in cancer sciences.

Shruthi Gopi (Pfizer at Boston, Summer 2021)

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”. I one hundred percent stand by these words, I think doing internships alongside the rigorous Biotechnology curriculum has helped me develop into a well-rounded individual before entering the real world. I have learned how to effectively communicate both vocally and in writing, as well as acquired the requisite hard skills for a career in Research and Development.  And the best part is that these skills are valued both in academia and the industry.

Sophia Giordano (Kaleida Health at John R. Oishei Children's Hospital, 2021 Summer).

Since it is a hospital, the lab needs to be open 24/7 to perform very important tests on patients’ samples. The hard work and dedication that these scientists have is quite admirable and I can now fully appreciate the work that they do..

Bradley Balk (UB CLIMB UP, 2021 Summer)

For my summer research experience, I was able to conduct clinically relevant, biomedical research in a professional lab. The program allowed me to gain experience with vital laboratory methods, work on experimental design and let me practice presenting scientific information in a formal conference setting. My experiences in the program undoubtedly benefitted me as both a science student and a scientist.
