This unit, located within Evergreen Health, tests new treatments for HIV and other major diseases.
HIV continues to be a common and serious infection in the U.S. We work with local patients of Evergreen Health to make a national impact on the treatment of HIV.
While mainly focused on performing trials for HIV studies, we are always expanding the scope of our work.
We are dedicated to:
The newly developed therapeutic agents we assess are potentially available to HIV patients at Erie County Medical Center.
In conjunction with the Division of Gastroenterology, we study recently developed drugs designed to treat hepatitis C, a particularly harmful co-infection for HIV patients because of its potential to cause hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure.
In addition, our researchers seek to understand how HIV infection interacts with hepatitis C virus infection to worsen liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Occasionally we engage in studies assessing the latest drugs developed to treat new, aggressive influenza strains.
Recent and upcoming clinical trials are designed to test much-needed new drug treatments for C. difficile-associated diarrhea. The recurrence rate of C. difficile-associated diarrhea is high and increasingly more patients in the community contract this infection.
