Gates Vascular Institute

A multidisciplinary team of health care specialists provides state-of-the-art stroke, cardiac and vascular care under one roof.

Gates Vascular Institute.
  • The Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) features four floors dedicated to comprehensive vascular care, revolutionary neurological procedures and cardiac services unavailable anywhere else in the region.

  • With its New York State-Designated Primary Stroke Center, GVI ranks among an elite group of U.S. hospitals — less than 1 percent — with Disease-Specific Care Certification for Acute Stroke from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Healthcare, Inc.

  • GVI and the affiliated Kaleida Health system also have achieved Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services/DNV. This designation is reserved for the best-equipped hospitals in an area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. It recognizes providers that meet a standard of excellence and comply with best practices, including the latest guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association.

  • GVI physicians collaborate with scientists in UB’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, housed on the upper four floors of a combined 10-story building. Together, they are accelerating progress toward medical breakthroughs and innovative treatments.

  • GVI and the adjacent Buffalo General Medical Center share a digital emergency department designed to accommodate more than 60,000 visits each year, a helipad, 610 beds, 28 operating rooms, 17 interventional labs for procedures, four CT scanners and four MRIs.
