He has served on the UB School of Medicine Dean’s Advisory Council, and received the 2006 Distinguished Alumnus Award. More recently he has served as a trustee for the American Council on Science and Health, advocates for sound science.

In 1977, Dr. Fisher founded INTERFACE, a volunteer team of plastic surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other specialists in the care of children born with facial clefts and other deformities. He has performed surgery on hundreds of afflicted children in developing nations and received the UCSD Chancellor’s Community Service Award.

In retirement, Dr. Fisher returned to school and earned an MA in United States Political and Economic History. His past historical works include Lead Pencil Miner; The Rush for Yukon Gold; Stolen Glory: The McKinley Assassination; and Stopping the Road: The Campaign Against Another Trans-Sierra Highway.

Silicone on Trial: Breast Implants and the Politics of Risk, written as a tribute to America’s remarkable medical device industry, deals with the growing conflict between scientific enterprise and a politically-driven regulatory process. His most recent work. Preparing the Soil for UC San Diego, examines how UCSD acquired its land in the face of conflicting community expectations for the institution’s local role.
