Fellowship in Community Engagement, Administration and Leadership

About the Fellowship

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences seeks medical students or biomedical sciences graduate students to work on projects that address social, educational or health care inequities.

This fellowship provides an opportunity to develop leadership skills to advance equity and promote community engagement in institutional and community settings, and advance the Jacobs School’s mission to create a supportive learning environment.

Applicants will work with a primary mentor in the Jacobs School to address research questions focused on equity. The projects funded will focus on:

  • community and academic environment
  • educational advancement
  • innovation in addressing disparity
  • quality assessment

New this year: We can fund Health Sciences Scholarly Projects that align with the themes of this fellowship.

Fellows will work on the research and design, implementation or analysis of their project over a 12 month period.

At the completion of the 12 month period, fellows will present their findings at the annual Fellowship Symposium scheduled for the month of April.

Eligibility

  • Jacobs School trainee – medical and graduate (MS, PhD, MD/PhD)
  • Mentor-mentee match with Jacobs School faculty as primary mentor 
    • Secondary mentor – can be outside of the Jacobs School

Funding

  • Amount: $2,500 to start (then up to $3,500 with justification)
  • Uses: Directly related to project (host event, gift cards, purchase software, data analysis, attend a recruitment event, administer a survey, attend a conference)
  • Not used for: Anything that is not directly related to the project or self funds
  • We will collect information from you that will help with distributing funds

Award Selection and Announcement

Applications will be reviewed by our Community Engagement Fellowship Committee.

Funded applications will be communicated via email.

Research Symposium - April 2026

  • A 10-minute presentation of your results and/or progress (anticipated results)
  • Event open to the community to attend

To include in presentation:

  • background and gap in knowledge
  • project objectives/hypothesis/research question
  • methods used
  • project outcomes and accomplishments 
  • project impact/significance
  • future directions
