Outpatient Addiction Services

This rotation teaches you how to manage former inpatients who have transitioned to outpatient addiction care.

Working with a multidisciplinary team that includes counselors and site physicians, you’ll:

  • help facilitate individual and group counseling sessions
  • interview family members to confirm or refute self-reports
  • conduct psychometric tests
  • assess and manage withdrawal syndromes as they appear in an ambulatory setting
  • identify appropriate candidates for office-based opioid treatment
  • develop treatment plans
  • participate in multidisciplinary case conferences

This eight-week rotation enhances your understanding of mental health/comorbid psychiatric assessments and complements your continuity clinic training.

You may spend all eight weeks at one location — either Horizon Health or an ECMC clinic — or divide your time between the two.

Each site serves different populations: Horizon Health draws more suburban patients while ECMC draws from an urban patient base.

Caseload

You won’t be assigned cases during this primarily observational experience, though you will work with the treatment team to facilitate individual and group counseling sessions.

  • 25-50 years old, with a mean age of 35
  • 65 percent Caucasian
