2023 Medical School Commencement Speaker Announced

Published February 13, 2023

Dr. Eric Rubin.

The countdown to commencement has begun! Over the course of the next few months, the Class of 2023 will be finishing final projects, making memories, and preparing to celebrate accomplishments!

This year, I am honored to announce that we will be joined by Eric J. Rubin, MD, PhD, editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine as the keynote speaker at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo’s 177th annual Medical School Commencement Ceremony on April 28, 2023.

We wanted to choose a dynamic speaker, an esteemed physician-scientist and respected leader who would inspire our student body. Dr. Rubin embodies all these qualities.

A symbol of leadership and first-hand experience throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Rubin played an invaluable role as editor-in-chief at the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. His expedient identification and publication of critical studies and video presentations informed us on all aspects of COVID. Furthermore, as a member of the FDA’s scientific advisory board, he was part of the process that enabled timely approval of desperately needed vaccines and treatments.

As an expert in the field of infectious disease who has conducted groundbreaking tuberculosis research and helped countless patients in often neglected populations, he exemplifies determination, commitment and excellence.

We are extraordinarily excited to be hosting this accomplished health care leader at our upcoming commencement. We anticipate that Dr. Rubin will speak to his role in the age of COVID-19 as well as how research and team science benefit our society.

Our 2023 Medical School Commencement Ceremony will be held at the Center for the Arts at UB’s North Campus in Amherst, NY.
