Driving Innovation in Health IT: UB Welcomes Dr. Asim Khan

Dear University at Buffalo Community,

I’m pleased to welcome Asim Khan, PhD, who will join the University at Buffalo as health sciences chief data and information officer on Sept. 2. He will also serve as chief data and information officer for UBMD Physicians’ Group, the affiliated medical practice plan of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and executive director of UBIT HIPAA Compliance.

In these roles, Dr. Khan will be responsible for shaping and executing a unified information technology strategy across UB’s health sciences and UBMD’s 17 practice plans. His leadership will drive digital transformation, data governance and clinical interoperability to support innovation in patient care, research, and education.

Dr. Khan will oversee the implementation of the Epic electronic medical record across UBMD and the practice plans, which span independent clinics and collaborative partnerships with affiliated hospitals. He will also lead UB’s information security team and the Office of Medical Computing, fostering a culture of collaboration and security while aligning IT strategies with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.

With over 20 years of experience in health care information systems, Dr. Khan most recently served as system director of IT business intelligence and interoperability at Allegheny Health Network. In this role, he led enterprise-wide data and digital services across a broad network, driving innovation and operational excellence.

Dr. Khan is a nationally recognized expert in Epic electronic medical records, data governance, interoperability, and cloud computing. He has successfully led large-scale digital health initiatives, including the development of clinical data repositories, Epic Cogito infrastructure, advanced analytics and reporting systems, and AI-powered automation in clinical workflows. His work has improved clinical care, expanded patient access, strengthened research capabilities, enhanced financial performance, and contributed to better health outcomes.

Dr. Khan holds a PhD in computer and information science with a health care focus, along with advanced degrees in information quality, project management, and engineering management, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering. He is an alumnus of the George Washington University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. His research interests include federated health care data governance, shared data platforms and artificial intelligence.

He is a certified chief data officer and holds numerous industry-standard credentials in Epic EMR project and agile management, enterprise health data systems, advanced analytics and cloud platforms. He has also served as adjunct faculty at Colorado State University Global and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, teaching courses in computer science, health care management, project management and information quality.
