Dear Jacobs School community:

I am pleased to announce that Michael G. Malkowski, PhD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, effective July 16.

Dr. Malkowski brings a proven track record of academic leadership as chair of the Department of Structural Biology since 2015. A distinguished structural biologist, he offers deep expertise in molecular mechanisms that are foundational to pharmacology and toxicology, ensuring continuity in the department’s research and educational missions during this transition.

His research on the structure-function relationships of medically relevant proteins, particularly metalloenzymes involved in lipid metabolism, directly supports drug discovery and toxicological science. His lab employs advanced techniques such as X-ray crystallography and  and cryo-electron microscopy to explore molecular interactions central to diseases like diabetes, obesity, inflammation and cancer.

Dr. Malkowski’s longstanding ties to UB and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute — now integrated with UB — further strengthen our collaborative research ecosystem. His scientific impact is reflected in numerous honors, including NIH fellowships and awards from the Eicosanoid Research Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation.

As interim chair, Dr. Malkowski will guide the department forward, fostering innovation, expanding research, and sustaining momentum across all programs. His leadership ensures a seamless transition and continued excellence.

This appointment follows the departure of David Dietz, PhD, who will become dean of the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy on August 1. We thank Dr. Dietz for his service and wish him continued success.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Malkowski to this important role. A national search for a permanent chair will be launched soon, led by Gustavo Arrizabalaga, PhD, senior associate dean for faculty affairs and professor of pharmacology and toxicology, and microbiology and immunology.

Sincerely,

Allison Brashear, MD, MBA
