Dear Jacobs School community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of James Mills as the new chief operating officer and chief business officer (COO/CBO) of UBMD.

Jim brings with him a wealth of financial and operational experience and a proven track record of success in health care management. Since 2013, he has served in the dual role of chief administrative officer and chief financial officer for the University at Buffalo Surgeons, Inc., part of the UMBD Physician’s Group.

Under his leadership, UBMD surgery has undergone a threefold expansion in size and has achieved notable success across all metrics of service quality, culture and financial performance. Jim's instrumental role in developing collaborations and overseeing fiscal, operational and compliance management has been pivotal to the success of several UBMD practice plans. His effective leadership style, strong communication skills and strategic development expertise have led to impactful changes throughout UBMD.

Jim’s career spans over 35 years, with a particular focus on leading diverse business and finance teams in the health care sector for the past 20 years. Before joining UBMD, he held multiple senior management positions at Dopkins and Company. Over nearly a decade there, he provided leadership and strategic direction as a health care consultant to numerous practices, hospitals and not-for-profit organizations across Western New York.

Jim has also held upper management positions in finance and business development at FedEx Trade Networks, Softbank Services Group and Sport Systems, a division of Delaware North Companies. In these roles, he was instrumental in re-engineering operations to enhance productivity and efficiency, developing innovative profitability initiatives and providing key leadership and strategic direction in operational improvement and business development.

In his new role as COO/CBO for UBMD, Jim will oversee all operational and financial aspects of the organization. He will advise departments and board committees, collaborate with senior leadership, and make key decisions on alliances, mergers, and investments. Jim will also evaluate and develop the finance division, ensure timely financial reporting, and participate in strategic growth planning while overseeing specific departments to ensure their financial health and operational success.

Jim earned a Master of Business Administration from Canisius University where he also completed his Bachelor of Science degree.

I am confident that Jim's extensive experience and visionary leadership will continue to drive UBMD's mission of providing outstanding health care services to our community. Please join us in welcoming Jim Mills to his new role as COO/CBO of UBMD.

Sincerely,
