We provide thorough training that prepares you to specialize in the clinical assessment, physiologic testing, diagnosis, management and prevention of sleep and circadian rhythm disorders.

We will thoroughly prepare you for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam. Our program has a high pass rate; the majority of our graduates successfully complete the exam and go on to productive careers.

In our fellowship, you will work with adult and pediatric patients from a wide variety of backgrounds. You’ll develop expertise with treatments and procedures key to providing advanced care as you oversee your patients’ sleep complaints, diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions. You’ll manage conditions including sleep related breathing disorders, insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, parasomnias and sleep related movement disorders.

Subspecialty rotations will expand your education with interdisciplinary exposure to related fields such as dental sleep medicine and bariatric medicine.

During our technical training, you’ll gain experience in sleep study centers and supplement your clinical experience by learning about multi-parametric and diagnostic tests used in sleep studies. The combination of our technical and clinical training will help you develop a flexible, adaptable skill set.

Our department has strong ties to the Buffalo VA Medical Center as well as community-based clinics and sleep study centers, giving you experience working in settings covering the spectrum of sleep medicine treatment. You will communicate and collaborate with professionals throughout the continuum of care, from polysomnography technicians to seasoned sleep specialists.

Our core faculty are board certified, clinically active physicians and researchers. Our low fellow-to-faculty ratio allows us to work closely with you, from direct observation and feedback at the bedside to advising you on your educational goals, patient care and scholarship.

Our program has a record of admitting applicants from various specialties, including clinical neurophysiology, pulmonary medicine, psychiatry, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and neurology. The disparate backgrounds of our fellows enable them to learn from each other; they find they have opportunities to broaden their perspectives on sleep medicine.

Our program gives you the option of collaborating with world-class faculty on research projects investigating the development, treatment and prevention of sleep disorders. Your research mentor will guide you as you embark on the process of conducting research, and we’ll provide you with support to ensure you are equipped to attend national meetings.
