Universal Primary Care

This family medicine center is both a Federally Qualified Heath Center (FQHC) and a nationally certified Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) serving more than 10,000 patients in Cattaraugus, Allegany and McKean counties.

Universal Primary Care building in Olean, NY.

Training longitudinally in one of the country’s top federally qualified health centers, you’ll help fill the gap in access to care for this rural region’s population of historically uninsured and underinsured patients.

As an awardee of HRSA's Quality Improvement Awards (Access Enhancer, Health Disparities Reducer, Advancing HIT for Quality), Universal Primary Care (UPC) is committed to high-quality patient-centered care.

This 20,000-square-foot clinic features 30 exam and treatment rooms, ultrasound and non-stress testing machines, laboratory, community education training center and a conference room with state-of-the-art IT equipment.

In addition to physicians, this family medicine center’s staff includes cerrtified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, behavioral health social workers, a care management team and clinical nursing, medical assistant and front office support staff.

Continuity of care and our residents are the center of your family medicine center practice. You’ll work alongside our five board-certified family medicine faculty and our entire health care team, refining your skills in an unopposed, highly collegial environment.

Our busy practice assures your competency in every area of family medicine. We deliver 400 babies annually, so you’re guaranteed extensive experience in obstetrics and women’s health.

We use certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) and have a network linking our campus with our UB peers in Buffalo for video conferences, medical imaging transmission, instant consultation and translation for patients who don’t speak English.

Training

You’ll start your family medicine center training at UBMD Family Medicine Amherst in Williamsville. For the final 5 months of your intern year, you’ll relocate to Olean for your family medicine center training at UPC.

UPC will serve as your family medicine center throughout your PGY-2 and -3 years. You’ll spend three half-days per week here.

Your rotations in gynecology and obstetrics also take place at UPC.

Training in an FQHC, you’ll care for a diverse group of patients, regardless of their ability to pay. You’ll help remove barriers to care by conducting community needs assessment studies and developing projects that directly benefit our region’s medically underserved population.

These may range from health screenings to fall prevention workshops to interventions aimed at reducing premature delivery and low birth weight.
