  • The Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) features four floors dedicated to comprehensive vascular care, revolutionary neurological procedures and cardiac services unavailable anywhere else in the region.

  • GVI physicians collaborate with scientists in UB’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, housed on the upper four floors of a combined 10-story building. Together, they are accelerating progress toward medical breakthroughs and innovative treatments.

  • GVI and the adjacent Buffalo General Medical Center share a digital emergency department designed to accommodate more than 60,000 visits each year, a helipad, 610 beds, 28 operating rooms, 17 interventional labs for procedures, four CT scanners and four MRIs.

Training

You’ll train in Gates Vascular Institute’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs.

Here, you’ll be exposed to:

  • PCI, including hemodynamic support devices (intra-aortic balloon pump and Impella device)
  • structural heart interventions (TAVR, MitraClip and Watchman)

You may also take electives in cardiac surgery at GVI, ranked in the top 2 percent nationally in this field by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

The GVI is seamlessly integrated with, and physically linked to, Buffalo General Medical Center. Between the two sites, you’ll train with our board-certified faculty to deliver the full complement of advanced cardiac services to patients from across the region.
