University Medical Resident Services (UMRS) and University Dental Resident Services (UDRS) provide a robust benefit package for you.
Each of the affiliated teaching hospitals, at its expense, maintains professional liability insurance coverage on behalf of the residents for the professional resident services rendered at that institution. This coverage is specific to the hospital in which the resident is rotating. Coverage in non-hospital settings is provided for GMEC approved rotations only at the expense of the hospital supporting the resident pay line. No coverage is provided for moonlighting or other activities that are not part of the approved residency/fellowship curriculum.
Medical insurance coverage is offered through Highmark. The plan provides medical and prescription coverage and a vision discount program.
Residents/fellows must request enrollment and provide proof of such coverage to the UB Office of Graduate Medical Education annually during the open enrollment period or within the notification requirements of a qualifying life event or becoming newly eligible.
Dental insurance coverage is available through Highmark. The plan assists with preventive, basic and major dental expenses to a maximum of $1,250/plan year/insured.
Group basic life insurance coverage is provided through Lincoln Financial Group in the amount of $50,000. The coverage also includes accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits. Premiums for the group basic life insurance coverage are paid in full by the employer.
Voluntary life insurance can be purchased through Lincoln Financial Group, at the resident/fellow’s expense through payroll deductions. Residents/fellows have the option of purchasing voluntary life insurance in amounts of $50,000, $100,000, $200,000 or $300,000. Residents/fellows may also purchase coverage for their spouse (if not an UMRS/UDRS employee) in an amount not to exceed 50% of the amount purchased for themselves as well as $10,000 per child from six months to age 19 ($250 from 14 days to six months). Rates and payroll deduction amounts are provided at the time of enrollment and are re-calculated annually at the start of the plan year (July 1).
New York State mandated short-term disability coverage is provided through ShelterPoint Insurance.
Coverage of up to $2500 per month for PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents and $3000 per month for PGY-3 residents and beyond is provided through Guardian after 180 days of disability. The coverage guarantees income to eligible residents/fellows if they become unable to practice due to sickness or injury, including HIV. Excellent conversion privileges are available upon completion of residency/fellowship training. Premiums are paid in full by the employer.

We provide standard allowances with the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and board certification for vacation, sick leave and paid holidays.
For more information, please see UMRS/UDRS Employee Vacation and Leaves of Absence Policy.
Residents may be given a maximum of 10 paid holidays per year provided this does not conflict with Board eligibility requirements. Residents should refer to their program director for the program specific policy related to holiday pay.
Residents/fellows may be eligible for leave of absence as found in their employer’s Leave of Absence Policy. Residents/fellows should contact HR at ubgmehr@buffalo.edu for specific information.
Any leave of absence that may result in the resident/fellow’s inability to meet Board eligibility requirements for training time will result in an extension of the training program.
Our program offers residents additional employment benefits such as call rooms at our affiliated hospitals and access to university athletic and library facilities.
Two lab coats are provided to each resident/fellow at the start of employment. Additional coats may be purchased from the UB Office of Graduate Medical Education.
A prescription name stamp is provided to each resident/fellow if requested by their program at the start of employment. Replacement stamps may be purchased from the UB Office of Graduate Medical Education.
All residents/fellows receive an appointment as a medical or dental resident/fellow that enables them to use all gym, library, computing and University facilities. In addition, residents/fellows may avail themselves of the UB Employee Assistance Program, a confidential assessment and referral service.
As part of orientation, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications are provided for residents in programs that require specialty certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) is mandatory for all residents and fellows; reimbursement is not offered for BLS. Reimbursement for certification in Advanced Life Support (ACLS) is provided for incoming residents and fellows whose programs require the training, but must be requested by Dec. 31 of each year.
Details related to required certifications and reimbursement can be found on the Office of Graduate Medical Education webpage.
UB affiliated hospitals provide call rooms as required for all residency/fellowship programs that provide in-house call coverage as an approved part of the residency/fellowship curriculum.
