Hello everyone,
My name is John Kraus, and I am a current M4 and the outgoing medical student representative to the Medical Society of the County of Erie.
The Medical Society of the County of Erie (MSCE) is seeking applications from current medical students interested in serving as the next student member of its Executive Board.
Founded in 1821, MSCE is the professional society representing more than 3,000 physicians across Western New York. The society works to advance public health, support physicians, and advocate for the medical profession at the local and state levels. Through its Executive Board, MSCE helps shape priorities related to health policy, community engagement, legislative advocacy, physician leadership, and collaboration with the Medical Society of the State of New York and the AMA.
This student position is a unique opportunity to represent the medical student voice within organized medicine in Erie County. The student board member serves as a bridge between local medical students and the practicing physicians who are actively shaping policy, public health initiatives, and the future of medicine in our region.
As I graduate and head into residency, I am excited to help identify the next student representative who will continue building this role into a meaningful and lasting connection between MSCE and the medical student community.
The role includes:
• Serving as a voting member of the MSCE Executive Board
• Attending monthly evening board meetings, held in person or hybrid in Buffalo
• Acting as a liaison between MSCE and the medical student body
• Helping connect students with advocacy, volunteer, public health, and organized medicine opportunities
• Contributing to legislative outreach, advocacy days, public health campaigns, and resolutions when possible
• Serving through graduation to allow for continuity and meaningful contribution
To apply, please complete this form by Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET:
MSCE Student Board Application
Selected applicants will be contacted for a brief conversation with me and potentially other MSCE board members before a final decision is made.
If you have any questions about the role or the application, please feel free to reach out to me directly at
I am excited to read your applications and to help welcome the next student representative to MSCE.
Best,
John Kraus

Dear students,
Preceptors do more than teach clinical skills—they share their time and expertise to support your growth as a medical professional. A single preceptor can make a meaningful difference in your learning experience. If you’ve trained under a preceptor, they are most likely a volunteer faculty member at the Jacobs School.
You are invited to pause, reflect, and think about the preceptor who encouraged you the one that challenged you or make you feel that you belong, and write a brief thank you note to let them know their dedication mattered.
In this link you can do that. We will feature those notes in faculty appreciation initiatives.
Deadline is April 30, 2026. We appreciate your participation in advance.

Hi all, just a reminder that Peer Mentor applications are due soon! Excited about the response we've gotten so far, but would love to see at least 1 or 2 Mentors for each Block.
As a reminder, we are seeking students that are interested in participating as Learning Communities Peer Mentors for our new M1 students. Your responsibilities would include:
-connecting with M1 students in one Learning Communities Block to provide guidance, support
-attend the required Peer Mentor Orientation meeting Friday, April 24, 12pm
-meeting with your M1 Mentees officially on two Tuesday afternoons (dates TBA) for 1 hour meetings during their first semester, and then organically answering questions and offering support as needed otherwise
We know you're all juggling so much this year, and really appreciate those that would want to give their time and energy to mentor our new M1s. Every Peer Mentor that fulfills the above responsibilities will earn their Neighborhood 10 Community Cup points (equivalent to attending 10 events).
Ideally, we will have Peer Mentors from each Faculty Coach Block in every Neighborhood so that you could mentor M1s in your own Block in your own Neighborhood (although we may need to move Mentors around depending on numbers). Note that there are no scheduled meetings during spring semester (i.e. during Dedicated); we would just expect you to continue to support your M1s informally as needed. Please note that Peer Mentors must be in good academic standing, and we ask you to consider the commitment you're making to your mentees before applying.
We encourage anyone to apply who is excited about helping our incoming class of M1s thrive at Jacobs! Please use the link below to apply. Applications are due Wednesday, April 15, by 9pm.

Hi all,
We would like to invite you to participate as a learner in the Peer Educator Program for the upcoming Homeostasis 2: GI and Renal course. As a learner in the program, you will be paired in a small group with an M3 or M4 peer educator who will coordinate weekly review sessions for you to review high-yield material, ask questions about concepts introduced during class, learn helpful study strategies, and practice applying the material.
Please sign-up via this form by this Saturday, 4/18 at 11 pm. Please note, peer educators are volunteer students who dedicate a significant amount of time to preparing and holding review sessions to benefit your learning while balancing their own academic pursuits. Out of respect for these volunteers’ time, we kindly ask that you only sign up if you genuinely intend to participate.

Hi M1s,
As you may have learned, Apple recently announced its newest device, the MacBook Neo, which uses the new A18 chipset and macOS Tahoe (26).
Examplify works with most modern computers, both Mac and Windows operating systems. To keep Examplify current in the rapidly evolving market, when new technology is introduced, Examplify works hard to timely implement updates that accommodate changes in technologies.
They have partnered with Apple to start testing Examplify’s compatibility with MacBook Neo, but have not finished certification yet. They expect this additional regression and performance testing to be completed in several weeks.
To maintain the efficacy of the product, they recommend that exam-takers not use the MacBook Neo with Examplify until they have completed testing and certify support.
As soon as they certify Examplify for the MacBook Neo you will receive a communication from them with an update to their Minimum System Requirements.
Sincerely,
~Nick

Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well. As I am sure many of you have heard, Polity and all Polity-affiliated activities were put on pause for the last month or so due to acquiring and processing a new liability insurance policy in order to be in compliance with SUNY guidelines. As of yesterday, we have lifted that pause and all activity can resume.
Among many other pieces of good news, this means that I can begin organizing the UWorld sale for Step 1 and Step 2. Since I can now communicate with UWorld, I already reached out to the UWorld representative earlier today to get an understanding of pricing, timeline and other details and will let you know once I hear more!
I just wanted to let you all know that Polity still is planning on hosting this sale even though it may be a bit delayed compared to previous years due to the freeze we had over the last month. I promise I am working to get it up and running as quickly as possible! As I mentioned, I’ll reach out again in the coming weeks once I hear more. Thanks so much for your understanding!
Have a great weekend, and please let me know if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Lauren

Dear Medical Students,
Students and faculty from the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences (UND-SMHS) are conducting a research study examining student perceptions of artificial intelligence integration in healthcare education using the Student Perceptions of AI Integration in Healthcare Education (SPAIN) scale.
This study has been approved by the UND Institutional Review Board (IRB), and participation is completely voluntary.
If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a 30-question survey, which should take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Your responses will help provide valuable insight into how artificial intelligence is perceived across healthcare education programs.
If you have questions feel free to reach out back to me.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. We would greatly appreciate your participation.

Hello all!
It's that time of year where the JSMBS NYS Mentoring Club is accepting applications for the 2026-2027 EBoard! There are 2 positions available. To apply, please send an email to
Best regards,
Jess, Kyle, and Cynthia
Greetings M1s,
It’s the time of year when I reach out to those interested in being a TA for the upcoming run of the summer gross class. This year the class runs from Monday, May 18 (the week after convocation) to Friday, July 10. We typically hire a total of 10 teaching assistants, some of whom are selected from the current 427 class.
If you are interested in the position, please follow the link below and complete the application form. The form will remain open for the next week, closing Friday, March 6 at midnight. The instructors will meet during the middle of March to review applications and make decisions regarding offers. We will reach out once the summer budget is finalized.
Application Form
We recognize that the first three weeks of the course overlap with your last three weeks of homeostasis II. We work with medical students selected for the paid position to minimize TA responsibilities during this period, with greater responsibilities being assumed during the last five weeks of the class. There is also the opportunity for those remaining in Buffalo over the summer to help with the class in a non-paid volunteer capacity during the latter weeks of the class (see below).
Some important questions that we are frequently asked…
What criteria are used to decide on TAs?
It’s a multifactorial process. Previous performance in gross anatomy coursework at UB is obviously going to be considered, but beyond that, demonstrating a passion for the content and commitment to helping others are other characteristics that are heavily considered in generating the final rank list of candidates.
When will we hear about the decision? Do you only contact successful applicants?
It depends on finalization of the summer budget, which can take some time. We will contact all applicants to let them know when final decisions have been made so that nobody is left wondering if a decision is still pending.
I’m being considered for summer research programs/internships/etc. Should I avoid applying for the TA position in case I am later offered a different position that is a better fit?
We appreciate the need for students to apply to a variety of positions and to take the one that is the best fit for their future aspirations. There will be no hard feelings if you accept a TA position with us but later decline for another offer. We will simply go to the next candidate on the wait list. This is something that happens all the time and which we have come to anticipate.
I might be away for portions of the summer class? Should I not bother applying?
You should still apply. There is a question on the application regarding this and we expect you to be honest with your response. It will be a poor reflection on candidates that are given an offer without divulging known travel plans in advance. This may put you at a disadvantage when compared to candidates that can commit to the full summer, but we have been known to hire strong candidates that will be away for portions of the summer, provided that they make up the missed time in other ways (e.g. open lab coverage).
I won’t be able to commit to a paid position, but would still be interested in volunteering in the lab when my schedule allows. What should I do?
You should still complete the form. It contains a question related to this situation. You will be placed in a separate pool of candidates who will be considered for volunteer positions. Time commitment as a volunteer is minimal and can be restricted to avoid conflicts with your course work.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any additional questions about the position, and GOOD LUCK!

Jacobs School of Medicine Class of 2029
Please see e-mail on behalf of Dr. Holmes and Joseph Skrajewski:
We are pleased to have secured funding to accept one to four University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences students to participate in the Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) program at Hazelden Betty Ford in Rancho Mirage, California either the week of May 18-22, June 1-5, June 22-26, or July 20-24, 2026.
The Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) has been developed carefully to provide an overview of treatment for the disease of addiction in a comprehensive and experiential educational experience through the eyes of our patients. Please see attached for the program description.
The experience students have is designed to engage them on an emotional and intellectual level. It is a rich and meaningful experience because we take students out of the classroom for much of their program week and involve them directly with our patients, not as professionals, but as participants/observers in their journey of self-discovery and recovery. Notice I put the word “participant” before “observer.” This is not a voyeuristic experience. It is one of engagement! Students will be expected to participate with the patients in the process of self-exploration and self-discovery. It is a worthwhile endeavor.
The SIMS program offers a rare inside view of Hazelden Betty Ford’s approach to treatment of the person with substance use disorder. The patients know ahead of time that students will be joining them for the week. They will follow similar schedules as the patients with supplemental presentations designed specifically for students. Program activities include lectures, group therapy sessions, meals with the patients, specialty groups, and a host of additional activities.
The application process closes on Sunday, February 1st. The students will send one e-mail directly to me at
1. CV
2. One letter of recommendation from an individual that can speak to your talents and abilities
3. One page (500 words max) personal essay encapsulating these three questions:
1. In your own words, explain the definition of addiction.
b. How has addiction personally affected your life? *Please note that personal experience with addiction is not a requirement for acceptance.
c. What do you hope to achieve by participating in the SIMS program?
4. If you are available to attend in Rancho Mirage, CA (a) the week of May 18-22, (b) the week of June 1-5, (c) the week of June 22-26, (d) the week of July 20-24, 2026, or (e) if you are available for more than one or all of them (please specify which).
Our Hazelden Betty Ford team will score all applications beginning Monday, February 2nd, then will make all acceptance decisions by Thursday, February 26th. Notification of the one to four acceptances will be made via a personal congratulatory phone call to them the following day, February 27th, along with a consolation e-mail going out to those not selected that same day.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this application process.

Dear First Year UB Medical Students
The deadline for applications for the T35 summer program is approaching on Monday. No research experience is required.
This email is to let you know that we are now accepting applications for the NIH-funded summer fellowship program for medical students called “Training the Next Generation of Clinician Scientists". This will be a 7 week in person program is designed for medical students and doctor of pharmacy students between their first and second years, during the summer of 2026 (June 8–July 24, 2026). Poster presentations and oral talks will be given in the first 2 weeks during your second year.
The program offers a great experience to introduce you to the exciting world of academic medicine through performing a mentored research project in the laboratory of a UB or Roswell Park faculty member in the broad area of infectious diseases, pharmacology, microbiology and immunology.
We welcome students who are interested in exploring or learning about becoming a physician investigator as a possible career choice. You do not have to have research experience, just an interest in trying it and a willingness to commit to a full-time effort for the summer.
The program involves full-time work with individually mentored research projects and attending weekly meeting where all will give updates to their fellow students on the projects and faculty will meet to discuss their career in research and present a seminar geared specifically for professional students.
Details of the program and how to apply are described here:
The application deadline is January 26, 2025 11:59pm. The application is online at the link above and is quite straightforward. No research experience is required. Students who complete the program earn a Digital Badge and the opportunity to earn a micro credential.

Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing well! I am reaching out with a request. To support our M2s during their Step 1 dedicated study period, we’re putting together small notes of encouragement to remind them they’re supported and not doing this alone.
We’d love your help. If you’re willing, please submit a short message of support—a sentence or two is perfect. It can be encouraging, funny, reassuring, or just a simple “you’ve got this.” Every note makes a difference during what can feel like a long and stressful stretch.
You can submit your messages here: Notes of Encouragement. We’ll compile and share them with students throughout their dedicated period.

Hello M1’s,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful and relaxing break. I wanted to send a friendly reminder to apply for the Orientation Committee. Creating a student-centered, informative, and exciting Orientation experience is only possible with student involvement – and we would love for you to be part of it!
Orientation Committee is a leadership opportunity for rising second-year students. The Orientation Committee is responsible for planning Orientation for the incoming first-year students. They will plan the logistics, creative elements, engage with first-year students prior to orientation, select the orientation leaders, and advocate for the student voice in orientation.
The time commitment for Orientation Committee is one 2-hour IN-PERSON meeting once a week from March-July, plus on average ~3 hours of work to completed on your own schedule. You must be available July 9-July 18 (will be excused for class) for Orientation Leader training and Orientation. You may have outside commitments (shadowing, research, etc.) but MUST be available for in person meetings. You will be allotted 2 excused absences from meetings on a case-by-case basis. This is vital to creating a bonded team atmosphere.
We are looking for all different students to be represented to create a well-balanced team. We need task managers, outgoing conversation starters, analytical masters, creative minds, etc.
Please see below for FAQs:
Question: Is this the same thing as being an Orientation Leader?
Answer: No, this is a leadership position on the Orientation team. In this role, you will be selecting Orientation Leaders and planning orientation. Orientation Leader applications will go out later in the semester.
Question: Can I still do research over the summer?
Answer: Yes, many if not all our OCs do research over the summer. We will work with research schedules to find a time that works all of us to meet.

Hello Everyone,
We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones and that you are excited about the upcoming Clinical Immersion (3/30-4/12).
In preparation for the upcoming Clinical Immersion, you will have the opportunity to select your specialty preference for the clinical setting that you are assigned for this Clinical Immersion (Inpatient, Outpatient, or Procedural). Please note that we do our best to accommodate these preferences, but due to site availability you may not be placed in your specialty of choice. This is not a first come first serve survey for site placements.
On the survey, please indicate if you are interested in a rural site placement. The rural sites are located primarily in Westfield, Dunkirk, Olean, Jamestown, and Fredonia. Please email me with any rural site questions.
Lastly, please indicate in the survey whether you have any local transportation concerns that would make it difficult for you to travel within the City of Buffalo and the surrounding local suburbs. Please be sure to give a short explanation of your particular circumstances that make transportation very difficult for you.
The Clinical Immersion Specialty Preference Pre-Survey will open 1/8 12:00pm thru 1/13 at 12:00pm.
Please see the link to the survey: https://smbsweb.med.buffalo.edu/ubmm/index.php
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you and have a good week!

Hello everyone!
I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating break! I'm sure we all needed it. The following event information is pertinent if you are on the executive board of ANY POLITY-SPONSORED CLUB!!! Please continue reading if this applies to you.
I wanted to get this event on everyone's calendar well in advance, as it is MANDATORY for all clubs recognized by Polity (and UB) and is necessary to access your budget for the year. The 2026 Polity Club E-Board Training will be held on Thursday, January 29, from 1-3 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2120B, co-hosted by the Polity Executive Board (especially moi) and the UB Student Life and Activities Department. I made sure to choose a weekday light in academics and a week following an exam to accommodate both medical students and the guests joining us. Food will be provided!
We will be joined by Mike Grela, Accounting Manager from the FSA department, and Tom Vane, Assistant Director of Student Engagement for Student Governance and Organizations, who will both present on important topics to ensure your club follows UB's guidelines and runs smoothly. I will share some tips and tricks on tools essential for running club events (booking rooms, obtaining food permits, renewing constitutions, etc.). Sam (Polity Treasurer) will review how to submit requisition requests to access each club's budget and obtaining reimbursements.
At least 2 members of each club executive board must attend. I would recommend that the President and Treasurer, at least, are among these members, but who attends is up to each club. Students on multiple executive boards can attend the training for multiple clubs. There will be a sign-in form at the event for you to indicate which clubs you are representing to track attendance.
Please fill out this form to indicate which club(s) you will be representing and any dietary restrictions you may have:
Please mark your calendars now! As previously stated, this event is mandatory for clubs to remain in good standing with Polity and the UB student life department and to access your club's budget. Please reach out ASAP if none of your club's e-board members can attend this event for any reason. This event is designed to make both our lives easier with simple club tasks. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
All my best,

. I am excited to inform you about the American College of Radiology (ACR) PIER (Pipeline Initiative for the Enrichment of Radiology) Internship for 2026, which is scheduled to take place from June 3 to July 24, 2026. This program, created through the ACR Commission for Outreach and Professional Opportunity, provides a unique opportunity for first-year medical students from institutions across the United States, particularly those who are underrepresented minorities (URMs) and women, to explore the specialty of radiology and gain research experience.
Selected scholars will be paired with a preceptor in their area of interest and engage in meaningful research throughout the summer. The 2026 program will be conducted virtually and will culminate in a presentation of their Case in Point presentation to be published by the American College of Radiology. The program also provides a stipend to support the scholars during their summer internship, and scholars receive ongoing mentorship to support them through the radiology residency application process.
Since its inception, close to 200 students have completed the PIER internship, and the program continues to foster diversity within the field of radiology. We encourage your institution’s first-year medical students to apply and join this exciting opportunity to gain valuable insights and experience in radiology.
For more information and to access the application, please visit the webpage here. Applications for the 2026 program are now open, and we would appreciate it if you could share this opportunity with your students.
We look forward to welcoming talented students from your institution to the ACR PIER program.
Sincerely,

Hello Jacobs School community,
Hope the school year is going well for all. This message is a reminder to submit your nominations for the Siegel Awards, recognizing excellence in education throughout our academic community.
Below is an introduction to our mission. Expect to see messages from us periodically to recruit nominations throughout the year.
The Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Excellence in Teaching is the foremost means for recognizing extraordinary teaching in our school. Louis A. Siegel received his medical degree from UB in 1923 and served as an assistant professor of obstetrics-gynecology for 21 years. He was a dedicated clinical teacher who was able to inspire medical students and house officers with enthusiasm and the spirit of inquiry.
The Siegel Awards provide an opportunity for students to recognize distinguished individuals who have impacted their education throughout medical school. Lecturers, small group leaders, anyone you worked with during clerkships (interns, residents, fellows, and attendings), volunteers, even M3s and M4s are all eligible for nomination. Don't forget to think about people you worked with throughout your medical school career and have not had the chance to nominate.
It is the quality of your nomination that matters, so please try to include specific examples that explain why this person should win. You may make more than one nomination, just submit another nomination form.
We would also like to introduce our new method for submitting Siegel Awards nominations, in which we have partnered with the Medical Education and Educational Research Institute to create a unified nomination process. Please note that all previous nominations will be reviewed in the same process as nominations via the new form. Also note that there will be a link to this form embedded in all MedHub evaluations moving forward, which will provide ease of access!
Here is the link for the new nomination form: 2025-2026 Siegel Awards Nomination Form (https://medicine.buffalo.edu/forms/meeri.html)
We will be accepting submissions until the (currently tentative) deadline of February 16th (2/16/26) at midnight.
Thank you in advance for helping us acknowledge great teachers in our community!
-The JSMBS Siegel Awards Committee

Dear M1s,
There is an opening for the Merchandise Committee Chair position, available to M1 students. The Merchandise Committee Chair is the friendly, behind-the-scenes connector who helps turn our merch ideas into something people are genuinely excited to wear and use. This person works closely with the Jacobs School Office of Communications to make sure everything is on-brand, coordinates with vendors to handle designs and orders, and is the go-to person for customers during merch sales.
It’s a very approachable, low-stress role that’s more about communication than heavy logistics. The time commitment is light and flexible, with roughly about an hour during merchandise sales, making it perfect for someone who enjoys collaborating, staying organized, and adding a personal, human touch to the process.
Please feel free to reach out to
Sincerely,
Sanjida Riea
Greetings everyone,
