Medical Laboratory Science Program Academic Standards

To maintain high academic standards for the purpose of successful progression through the Medical Laboratory Science Program, with degree conferral, completion of the MT Program and eligibility for NYS licensure and ASCP Board of Certification, the BCLS Department will review the academic standing (grades) of all accepted Medical Laboratory Science majors.

This academic standing review will take place at the end of each fall and spring semesters.

This review is for the MT Program curriculum only; for UB, see University Policies on Good Standing and Probation/Dismissal.

Medical Laboratory Science Program Progress

A student enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Science Program must complete the Medical Laboratory Science curriculum as outlined in the Medical Laboratory Science Handbook:

  1. MT Program students in the 2-year-full-time program will register and complete the MT Program in a two-year cycle.
  2. MT Program students in the 3-year-part-time program will register and complete the MT Program in a three-year cycle. (N.B.: no part-time students are accepted into the MT program.)

Medical Laboratory Science Program Academic Good Standing

A student is in Medical Laboratory Science academic good standing if the MT GPA (MT 300-400 level required courses) is 2.0 or greater.

Medical Laboratory Science Program Academic Probation

A student is on Medical Laboratory Science Academic Probation and not in Medical Laboratory Science Academic Good Standing if the most recent semester MT GPA (MT 300-400 level required courses) is between 1.67 and 2.0.

A student who is on Medical Laboratory Science Academic Probation will have a maximum of one additional semester in which to earn higher grades and to earn a MT Cumulative GPA (MT 300-400 level required course) of 2.0 or greater.

A student who is on Medical Laboratory Science Academic Probation must meet in-person with the BCLS Academic Advisor:

  1. To receive official notification of the MT Academic Probation
  2. To develop an effective academic strategy to earn higher grades

A student who has two consecutive semesters of Medical Laboratory Science Academic Probation will be reviewed by the BCLS faculty members for Medical Laboratory Science Program Dismissal.

Medical Laboratory Science Program Dismissal

A student who does not make Medical Laboratory Science Program Progress (academic completion of all registered required courses) will be reviewed by the BCLS faculty members for MT Program Academic Dismissal, regardless of MT GPA (300-400 level required course).

A student who, in the most recent semester, earns a MT GPA (300-400 level required courses) is 1.66 or lower, will be reviewed for MT Program Dismissal.

A student who is dismissed will receive notification via his/her UB email account.  All future MT courses registrations will be removed and/or blocked, and the student will have “MT accepted major” status removed from their academic record.

A student dismissed from the MT Program may appeal the dismissal in writing to the BCLS Academic Standings Committee during a period of time specified in the dismissal letter.  Consultation with the BCLS Academic Advisor is required as part of the dismissal appeal process.

The BCLS Academic Standings Committee will review the appeal, and if the BCLS Academic Standings Committee grants a reinstatement, written notification of the terms and conditions of continued study will be communicated to the student.
