Our nephrology fellowship is a two-year program that provides you with the strong clinical training and research opportunities you need to embark on a successful, productive career as a specialist in renal medicine.
We’ll help you fully develop your clinical care abilities, research expertise, professionalism, leadership skills and knowledge about the full spectrum of conditions you will encounter as a specialist in nephrology.
Our rotations and electives provide you with a broad skill set. We’ll give you opportunities to build expertise in transplantation, master fundamentals of consultative care, strengthen your knowledge of renal replacement therapies, learn about imaging modalities and interact with pediatric patients.
We will thoroughly prepare you for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam. Our program has a high pass rate; the majority of our graduates successfully complete the exam and go on to productive careers.
Our connections to major health care facilities throughout the greater Buffalo area give you experience treating a wide-ranging patient base in disparate clinical settings. Working in diverse environments exposes you to multiple styles of patient care and management.
We’ll train you in specialized nephrology facilities that offer patients world-class care. You’ll have the opportunity to train in a regional center for transplantation and kidney care, a setting enabling you to expand your knowledge of kidney-related services including kidney and pancreas transplants, outpatient and inpatient dialysis and vascular access surgical care.
You’ll also train in a medical center for veterans, an urban hospital, a county medical center, an NCI cancer center and a dialysis facility. Working at these sites will help you acquire the skills you need to adapt to a wide variety of professional settings.
As a fellow in our program, you can contribute to current developments in the field of nephrology. We’ll furnish you with solid knowledge of experimental design, approaches used in laboratory and epidemiology research, data analysis and standard methods of clinical trial design.

We prepare you to assume the role of an attending nephrologist. You’ll increase your confidence as a leader when you undertake an increased level of responsibility for making patient care decisions.
Our didactic curriculum supplements the bedside experience you gain during rotations. We enable you to participate in conferences, grand rounds and journal club sessions that sharpen your analytical skills and help you stay current in the field.
