Neurosurgery-Neurological Intensive Care

Gain invaluable experience through this interdisciplinary elective as you are exposed to a variety of neurosurgical and neuro-critical care cases and learn from our expert neurosurgeons and neuro-intensive care physicians.

You will learn about surgical approaches to and neurosurgical management of common neurologic conditions, such as:

  • raised intracranial pressure
  • intracerebral hemorrhage
  • ischemic stroke
  • cerebral neoplasm
  • spinal cord disease (neoplasm, trauma)

You will have the opportunity to gain experience with procedures, such as the placement of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitors.

You also will learn about airway and respirator management, especially how they affect neurological outcomes.

With permission from the attending neurosurgeon, you will scrub-in and directly observe neurosurgical procedures.

In addition, you will be exposed to neurosurgical outpatient care by participating in a weekly clinic with a neurosurgeon.

Comprehensive, Career-Focused Training

You will participate in clinical and teaching rounds in our specialized 18-bed Neurological Intensive Care Unit and throughout the Gates Vascular Institute and the adjacent Buffalo General Medical Center.

In addition, through our strong didactic training, which includes lectures in neurosurgery, you will gain knowledge to supplement and strengthen your clinical skills.
