Nephrology Fellowship

Wayne Waz and Shauna Tarsi.

Program director Wayne Waz, MD, with alumnae Shauna Tarsi, DO.

Our three-year fellowship program at Oishei Children’ Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education.

Our comprehensive program is aimed at creating excellent nephrologists and leaders in the pediatric nephrology field. We have had a fellowship track since 1990 and have produced outstanding pediatric nephrologists who are currently practicing in various programs and hospitals throughout the U.S.

We understand that you may be having difficulties in obtaining letters of recommendation, access to rotations to prepare for fellowship training, and ability to complete research projects. We will review all applicants in their entirety and take the various difficulties that the candidates face into consideration. We affirm our commitment to virtual interviews this season to all our applicants. This aligns with the consensus statement by the various Training Programs Committees.

What We Offer

  • Comprehensive training in all aspects of clinical nephrology, including nephritic syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, urinary tract infection, congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract, kidney stones, hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
  • Clinical research opportunities and translational research
  • Medium-size pediatric nephrology program — on average, we have 10-15 patients on chronic dialysis and perform 15-30 kidney biopsies per year
  • Electives in radiology, dialysis unit and pathology
  • Three full-time pediatric nephrologists who are committed to teaching and research

Overview

The goal of our program is to educate fellows and provide them with skills and expertise to excel in pediatric nephrology. At the completion of this training program, fellows will have the required abilities to thrive in an academic and/or private pediatric nephrology practice. We offer one position per year.

  • First year: devoted mostly to clinical duties; on clinical service for eight months, with a shared month elective in pathology/radiology, one month in dialysis unit and one month in research.
  • Second and third years: devoted mostly to research with clinical duties for three months in each of these years; we offer a 1-2 month elective in renal transplantation during the third year.
  • Fellows are expected to take one weekend per month and one night per week while not on service.
  • Fellows will have one half-day per week for their pediatric nephrology clinic throughout the fellowship program. The lupus clinic, in conjunction with rheumatology, is held the first Monday of each month and is covered by fellows when on service.

Pediatric Research Training

  • We provide fellows opportunities for clinical and translational research. You will learn how to prepare abstracts and manuscripts for publication as well as poster and oral presentations for regional and national meetings.
  • We encourage our fellows to submit original work for grant proposals (intramural and national sources) in order to gain experience in applying for funding.
  • Fellows will work with a mentor to help reach these goals. A scholarship oversight committee will provide direction and oversight of your research experiences. This committee includes three to five faculty members and meets twice a year.
  • University at Buffalo is part of the Midwest Pediatric Nephrology Consortium (MWPNC), a community that specializes in conducting clinical research studies in the pediatric nephrology field. Fellows are encouraged to participate in the consortium, which offers them the opportunity to have a multicenter research study.

Current research studies include:

  • correlation of urinary micro RNA in obesity and hypertension
  • diffuse mesangeal hyper cellularity and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
  • Pediatric Lupus Nephritis Registry
  • role of intestinal microbiota in pediatric patients with end stage renal disease
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug associated acute kidney injury: a prospective, observational study
  • childhood nephrotic syndrome observational study
  • genetic, genomic, and biomarker studies of Henoch-Schonlein purpura and IgA nephropathy in children
  • genome wide association study of childhood onset idiopathic nephrotic syndrome
