Dear Jacobs School Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of Frederick Sachs, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of physiology and biophysics at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, on Dec. 27 at the age of 82.

A world-renowned biophysicist and beloved member of our faculty for over four decades, Dr. Sachs's brilliance, dedication to science, and insatiable curiosity have left an indelible mark on the field of sensory biophysics and on the Jacobs School.

His groundbreaking discovery of mechanosensitive ion channels – the very sensors that allow us to experience touch, balance, and hearing – revolutionized our understanding of how we interact with the world. His research, fueled by an unwavering dedication to improving human health, extended beyond the lab and led to the discovery of a potential treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Sachs found joy in the music of his banjo and kayaking on the Niagara River. In his later years, he turned to steel sculpture, exploring the interplay of physics and motion with the same dedication he brought to his scientific pursuits.

The loss of Dr. Sachs leaves a profound void in our community. He was not only a valued colleague but also a treasured friend, mentor, and source of inspiration. His wisdom, dedication, and passion for learning will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Read more about his legacy here.

To celebrate the incredible life and contributions of Dr. Sachs, a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2024. Details regarding this event will be shared on the Kevin M. Mason Funeral Home’s website

Our hearts go out to Dr. Sachs's wife, Jane Jacobson, his children, grandchildren, and brothers during this difficult time. His spirit of curiosity and dedication to science will continue to inspire us all.

With deepest sympathy,
