Sanjay Sethi, MD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Medicine, is senior associate dean for clinical and translational research; chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine; director of the UB Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI); and director of the UB Clinical Research Office.

An internationally recognized physician-scientist and active clinical investigator, Sethi's primary research interests include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory infections. His pioneering work at UB has advanced understanding of how bacterial infections trigger COPD exacerbations, contribute to chronic airway inflammation and interact with impaired innate immune responses and bacterial strain variation.

Sethi has directed and participated in clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs and industry partners, focused on innovative therapies for COPD. He has co-authored more than 250 research articles, reviews and book chapters published in peer-reviewed medical journals, delivered invited lectures around the world and served on the editorial boards of leading scientific journals in respiratory medicine.

As director of the CTSI and the Clinical Research Office, Sethi has led efforts to strengthen UB's clinical and translational research enterprise through strategic process improvements and expanded collaboration across the Buffalo Translational Consortium. Under his leadership, the CTSI remains an active member of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Consortium, a national network of more than 60 medical schools and academic health centers dedicated to accelerating scientific discoveries and improving patient care.

Sethi co-directed the Long COVID Recovery Center, which provided care and support for patients experiencing the wide range of symptoms associated with long COVID. This work also led to the creation of the online WNY Long COVID Resource Center, which offers educational modules and resources for researchers across the university.

Sethi earned his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College. He completed his internship and residency at Cook County Hospital and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University at Buffalo.
