Academic Standing, Progress and Review

In the Department of Biotechnical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences, students’ academic progress is monitored and reviewed each semester by the Undergraduate Program Advisor. A file on each student is maintained, student progress through both university and program requirements is evaluated, and eligibility for graduation is reviewed.

Students who are worried about academic standing should meet with the advisor as soon as the student recognizes any signs of low grades. Students are encouraged to meet with faculty to institute a corrective action plan. Students experiencing academic difficulties will be contacted by the Undergraduate Program Advisor to explore corrective strategies within the Department and the University. Students in academic jeopardy are also encouraged to take advantage of the scheduled office hours of the faculty, teaching assistants and support staff.

Email Correspondence & Student Responsibilities

Email messages from the members of the department will be sent only to an UB email account.  It is the responsibility of the student to activate the account and to check frequently for email.  If email from a UB email account is forwarded by the student, and subsequently not recognized, lost or deleted by the other server or provider and email is not received, the University, Department, Faculty Member or Advisor shall not be held responsible for such lost correspondence.

Degree Conferral and Commencement

Students are eligible for degree conferral upon successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Science degree program courses, the University-wide general education program, UB Library Skills Workbook, and minimum credit hours and grade point averages. Degrees are conferred by the University at Buffalo three times per year, in accordance with the following dates:  June 15,  September 1 and February 1.

Commencement ceremonies are held only once per year. Students who anticipate a degree conferral in Medical Laboratory Science are welcome to participate in the commencement ceremony held at the University at Buffalo by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. This ceremony is held during the "Commencement Week" as established by the University at Buffalo; it is usually on a Thursday early in the month of May. The dates are widely distributed by the UB Student Response Center. Students will receive many notifications by different University administrators who coordinate commencement exercises; students are advised to read all emails and notices carefully to not miss deadlines.

Student Accessed Advisement Tools

UB HUB Academic Advisement Report (AAR)

Academic Advisement Report (University at Buffalo Academic Advisement Report and Degree Audit Reporting System) is an automated system that generates a report of each individual student's UB and transfer coursework matched with the student's degree requirements. Coursework satisfying university, general education and major requirements is identified. The report also identifies courses that will satisfy specific degree requirements yet to be completed.  UB HUB AAR is an advising tool and graduation check designed to assist the student, advisor, and university in determining the student's progress toward completion of all requirements. It is used by the Office of Degree Audit to determine if a student has completed all requirements for graduation.

Because it is accessed by different offices for progress toward graduation, it is important that a HUB AAR report be very accurate. A student may notice that transfer work, AP or CLEP credit may not accurately be reflected on HUB AAR.  It is the responsibility of the student to follow up on errors. Students who have inaccurate HUB AAR will NOT be cleared for degree conferral.
