Departmental Behavioral Expectations For Laboratory Classes

  1. Arrive promptly and be ready to begin at the designated starting time.  Allow time for putting on lab coat, putting away personal belongings, etc.
  2. Prepare for lab by reading the experiment before the start of instruction.
  3. Pay attention to preliminary instruction.  Do not ask the lab instructor to go over material missed by arriving late or not paying attention.
  4. If a late arrival is unavoidable (and is permitted by your instructor), quietly enter the laboratory so as not to disrupt the entire class.  Wait for an appropriate interval before unpacking your laboratory manual and supplies, donning your lab coat, etc.
  5. Follow all safety procedures.
  6. Do not monopolize instruments or equipment when other students are waiting to use them.
  7. Show respect and concern for other classmates by not monopolizing the instructors’ time.
  8. Focus on lab material during the lab period.  Notes, outlines, handouts, discussions, etc., from other courses should not be incorporated into the lab session.
  9. Work in an efficient manner so that the experiment is completed in the time allotted.
  10. Show concern and respect for instructors and teaching assistants while they are preparing and setting up for lab or introducing the next experiment.  Do not ask questions about homework assignments or lab reports during this time.
  11. Put all electronics to inaudible mode: cellular phones, pagers, PDAs, beeper watches, etc.
  12. Clean and disinfect the laboratory work area.
  13. Cellular telephones, electronic tablets, e readers, MP3 players and similar electronics should be stowed appropriately, especially when working with clinical samples and laboratory chemicals.
