Being named the recipient of a scholarship is an honor. Scholarships have different criteria, but generally are awarded to students who are outstanding in their field for academics, leadership or for continuation of studies through financial hardship. Any consideration for a scholarship will also include an evaluation of the professional behavior of the students, and compliance with the Essential Functions (please see appropriate section in this MT Handbook).
The following are areas students may wish to explore for scholarship.
The Program in Medical Laboratory Science awards the Sara Marie Cicarelli Memorial Scholarship to a student entering the senior year of the program. To be eligible a student must use the scholarship in the medical laboratory science program at UB, be in need of financial assistance, be in good academic standing, have an aptitude for laboratory work, and have a genuine interest in the profession of medical laboratory science. Interested students should apply in March of each spring; the Department emails all eligible seniors details.
In accordance with the scholarship guidelines, primary consideration in the review is given to those applicants who have expressed an interest in working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist immediately following degree conferral.
The Program in Medical Laboratory Science awards the Mary Cecilia Riforgiato Memorial Scholarship Award to the graduating senior for outstanding overall academic achievement. Students do not apply for this award; seniors are reviewed by the faculty.
MT 300-400 level GPA, and in accordance with the scholarship guidelines, primary consideration in the review includes a consideration of those students who have expressed an interest in working as a Medical Laboratory Science immediately following degree conferral.
This endowed scholarship is from a bequest of our former faculty and student, given to a junior student at the end of the spring semester who has excelled in microbiology courses. Students do not apply for this award; students are reviewed by the faculty.
MT Prerequisite Course in Microbiology, and MT 409 lecture grade and MT 409 laboratory grade, and, in accordance with the scholarship guidelines, primary consideration in the review includes a consideration of those students who have expressed an interest in microbiology (advanced MIC academics and/ or MT MIC career).
An endowed scholarship awarded for superior academics. Students do not apply for this award; seniors are reviewed by the faculty.
MT 300-400 level GPA.
Award for superior academics. It is awarded to one student upon the completion of the Medical Laboratory Science Program during the Jacobs School graduation ceremony. Students do not apply for this award; seniors who have completed the MT program and are ready for graduation/ degree conferral are reviewed by the faculty.
Some professional societies have scholarships. Any criteria, deadlines and review are established by the professional society. Students are encouraged to seek out additional sources.
