Erie County Medical Center

This 583-bed medical center is one of the area’s leading health care providers. It serves as a regional center for trauma, burns, rehabilitation and cardiac care and is the region’s largest safety-net hospital.

Located on the eastern side of Buffalo, this 583-bed acute care center admits patients from the local urban area, as well as a wide referral range that encompasses all eight counties of Western New York.

ECMC is a verified Level 1 Adult Trauma Center and a regional center for burn care, behavioral health services, transplantation, medical oncology and head & neck cancer care, and rehabilitation.

Case presentations span the range of disease states in internal medicine and general surgery, with many critically ill cases.

Training

At our ECMC training site, you'll increase your knowledge of diagnoses and therapies for a range of gastrointestinal disorders, with a special emphasis on liver diseases and irritable bowel syndrome. 

At this site, you'll see inpatients and outpatients, and you'll gain experience in our state-of-the-art endoscopy suite, which provides a full range of endoscopic services to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.

At ECMC, you can expect to learn about diagnostic procedures including:

  • colonoscopy
  • upper, lower and hepatobiliary endoscopy
  • esophagogastroduodenoscopy
  • endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

We hold teaching rounds at ECMC, which provide you with the opportunities you need to gain familiarity with presenting consultations, interviewing and examining patients at the beside, and reviewing materials including X-rays and pathology slides.

Behavioral Medicine Clinic

ECMC is home to an internationally recognized clinic and research facility that provides short-term, state-of-the-art treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other medical disorders.

Here, with the guidance of our behavioral medicine expert, you'll learn about brain-gut interactions and you'll gain insight into how patients' thoughts and behaviors affect their health.

Liver Clinic

You'll have the opportunity to train in a liver clinic that takes a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of liver disease.

Working alongside our liver disease specialists, you'll increase your knowledge of hepatology practice and learn about providing in-depth liver care, from diagnostics and testing to novel therapies.

Gain Experience in a Continuity Clinic

You'll follow a panel of patients on an ongoing basis at ECMC. Here, you'll gain valuable experience providing longitudinal outpatient care.
