Allergy Elective

Working alongside our allergy specialist, you will rotate in our outpatient allergy clinics and see patients with allergic and immunologic disorders.

Our allergy elective expands your knowledge of common allergic and immunologic disease states. We will guide you as you apply this knowledge with patients.

You will interact with patients who have conditions including:

  • allergic or other rhinitis
  • asthma
  • atopic dermatitis
  • hypersensitivity to certain drugs and foods
  • autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases

We will prepare you to apply and interpret skin tests. You will also learn how to take a comprehensive allergy history, perform a physical and address occupational and other relevant exposures.

Our allergy rotation gives you the skills you need to develop differential diagnoses and diagnostic plans for patients with a wide range of symptoms and physical signs of allergic disease. We will acquaint you with skin testing and desensitization therapy. By the end of the elective, you will understand the indication, performance and complications of desensitization therapy.

You will work with patients from a veteran population in this rotation, gaining experience with individuals from a diverse social and economic background.

You can expect to see approximately 70 patients during this rotation.
