Epilepsy

Gain advanced knowledge in interpreting electroencephalography (EEG) and managing epilepsy patients, training in our state-of-the-art Long Term Monitoring Unit and EEG laboratories.

Learning from our expert epileptologists, you will build on your hospital and ambulatory clinical experiences to focus on managing patients with epilespy.

You will train in our specialized EEG laboratories and the Long-Term Monitoring Unit at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, learning how and when to use various neurophysiology testing modalities, including:

  • adult and pediatric EEG
  • neonatal EEG
  • ambulatory EEG
  • long-term video EEG monitoring
  • evoked potentials (visual, brainstem auditory and somato-sensory)

Build Hands-On Technical Skills

You will gain hands-on skills in the technical aspects of EEG recording and interpretation.

You will quickly master the basics as you observe one of our experienced technicians to learn the technical basis of EEG, such as amplifiers, montages, calibrations, filters and principles of localization. You will soon be reviewing all EEGs and writing preliminary reports.

Your skill set will grow to include specialized procedures including:

  • use of various bipolar and referential montages
  • use of filters and amplifier sensitivity for accurate EEG interpretation and localization

Expert Diagnosis and Follow-Up

You also will learn to identify and interpret normal versus abnormal EEG results for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients, including:

  • normal EEG physiological waveforms
  • epileptiform activities
  • changes associated with encephalopathic states
  • changes associated with destructive processes or structural abnormalities

You will develop competence in integrating EEG findings into a comprehensive evaluation of neurological disease also involving patient histories, physical examinations and related EEG, imaging and laboratory results.

You will learn to develop differential diagnoses based on EEG findings as well as follow-up or long-term video EEG monitoring plans.

Comprehensive, Career-Focused Training

You will develop further expertise through our robust didactic training, continuing your participation in our child neurology, EEG/epilepsy and multidisciplinary epilepsy surgery conferences, building on your required EEG/evoked potentials rotation.

You also will gain crucial background knowledge through our seven-part EEG lecture series covering relevant topics, including montages; technical approaches to EEG; norms and variants; epileptiform activity; and encephalopathies.

You will develop a solid understanding of the relevant anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology behind various neurophysiology testing modalities.

In addition, you will learn from our knowledgeable specialists as you present your patients and review video-EEG materials during morning rounds in our specialized long-term EEG monitoring unit.
