Our department and the university recognize students’ achievements with a variety of awards.

Departmental Awards

The Dr. Gilbert M. Beck Memorial Prize

This prize is awarded to the senior with the highest academic average in psychiatry. Beck was the head of psychiatry at Buffalo General Hospital in the 1950s. After his death, Beck’s brother established this award in his honor.

The S. Mouchly Small Award

This award is given for excellence in clinical psychiatry. Small was professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry for almost 30 years, and he championed medical student education. His family created the award in celebration of his 80th birthday.

The Farny R. Wurlitzer Prize

The Wurlitzer family established this award to encourage interest in psychiatry. It is given to a graduating medical student for outstanding work in psychiatry.

  • Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship

    These fellowships are for candidates accepted into our medical school who have experience living or working in diverse environments or who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic, cultural or educational disadvantages and can bring these experiences to UB to help foster a community of diversity and inclusion.
  • Award of Excellence for Promoting Inclusion and Cultural Diversity
    4/7/22
    This honorary award acknowledges individuals whose actions, example and efforts contribute to a respectful and supportive environment at the university and in the Western New York community.
  • Eugene R. Mindell, MD, and Harold Brody, MD ’61, PhD, Clinical Translational Research Award
    8/25/21
    This award recognizes a junior research scientist for the best basic science research that seeks to solve a clinical problem.
