Forensic Psychiatry

Your work with forensic psychiatry introduces you to evaluating, diagnosing and treating psychiatric patients in the context of the legal system.

You will learn about relevant aspects of mental hygiene law, penal and correctional law; how mental health problems interact with the behavior patterns that bring people to the attention of the legal system; and the limitations on treating patients in forensic settings.

Your understanding of these topics supports duties that include determining appropriate levels of care for forensic patients and preparing comprehensive pre-sentence examinations and recommendations.

You gain experience in forensic psychiatry during your inpatientoutpatient, and emergency rotations, and also during your one-month core rotation.
