The COPD Studies Unit is home to the longest-running prospective study of COPD in the world.

The study had led to more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including a landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2002) that changed how investigators view bacterial infection in COPD.

Principal investigators are Timothy Murphy, MD, UB Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and Sanjay Sethi, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, both of whom are recognized as international leaders in COPD research.
