Addiction Medicine

Work alongside fellowship-trained addiction medicine faculty in a variety of clinical settings.

During this rotation, you can expect to gain experience in motivational interviewing and strengthen your foundational knowledge of addiction medicine. Further, we’ll expose you to the different levels of care and train you on harm reduction approaches to treatment of addiction.

Acquire Key Knowledge of Substance Use Disorders

Patients with substance use disorders receive treatment at various intensity levels, and an important skill to learn in training is matching patients to the appropriate level of care. We’ll ensure that you develop this skill.

Our wide range of learning experiences include:

  • managing medications for opioid use disorder, such as methadone and buprenorphine at outpatient treatment programs
  • treating hepatitis C in an urban hospital clinic
  • stabilizing a patient in severe withdrawal at the hospital
  • motivating mothers in recovery at a residential program

If you aim to truly make an impact — on both an individual and public health basis — these experiences will be essential to your career in preventive medicine.

The patient population reflects that of Erie County. You will see a diverse group of patients ranging from adolescents to older populations.

You will have opportunities to gain experience in methadone opioid treatment programs, outpatient substance use and mental health clinics, an inpatient stabilization and hepatitis C liver clinic, and residential programs designed for adolescents and mothers.

Customize Your Training Experience

Keep in mind: Our program is tailored to trainees’ individual interests.

In partnership with the addiction medicine fellowship at the Jacobs School, we will look into additional clinical opportunities if you are interested in expanding your options.

Length of Elective

You will rotate for several weeks in your second year.
