Cardiac Care

In a state-of-the-art cardiac care unit, you’ll learn how to manage patients with cardiac disease.

You’ll conduct histories and physical exams, perform evaluations, write progress notes and interpret diagnostic studies for CCU patients at Gates Vascular Institute, a world-class clinical facility.

As a fully integrated member of the CCU team, you’ll be responsible for directing patient care. You’ll work with an attending cardiologist, a cardiology fellow and residents from several other disciplines.

Your rotation includes a daily didactic lecture covering a spectrum of cardiology topics.

Techniques Learned

You’ll learn how to:

  • use advanced cardiorespiratory and hemodynamic monitoring techniques
  • conduct electrophysiologic tests
  • place Swan-Ganz catheters and transvenous pacemakers
  • use automatic cardioverter defibrillators

Conditions Seen

Typical diagnoses in the CCU include:

  • unstable angina
  • acute myocardial infarction
  • pulmonary edema
  • renal failure
  • GI bleeding
  • sepsis
  • respiratory failure
