Student assignments for required courses/clerkships in the clinical phase of the curriculum is done by a lottery for all required rotations in the third and fourth year. Once the lottery is finalized, students may trade either the entire schedule, or smaller blocks of time provided that they identify a student willing to make the switch, and that the switch satisfies all the education obligations of the students. Both parties must contact the Senior Curriculum Coordinator independently by email using their UB email address, and the switch must be approved by the Senior Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs and the Senior Associate Dean Medical Curriculum. Changes must then be communicated with the registrar or their designee and confirmed in the University registration system, HUB.

A medical school assumes ultimate responsibility for the selection and assignment of medical students to each location and/or parallel curriculum (i.e., track) and identifies the administrative office that fulfills this responsibility. A process exists whereby a medical student with an appropriate rationale can request an alternative assignment when circumstances allow for it.
