NSR 803 Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery Elective

The elective is a four-week rotation on a clinical service which provides 4th year medical students additional training and experience in managing patient care. Through a patient centered approach, students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to provide care for patients in a continuous and comprehensive manner rooted in scientific, evidence-based, and humanistic principles. A variety of modalities will be utilized during the elective including inpatient, outpatient, pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative experiences.  Instructional methods will include direct patient care, didactic presentations, and conferences.

Students are expected to assume appropriate patient care responsibilities and work actively in multi-disciplinary teams, providing individualized patient care with graduated autonomy and accountability, allowing for enhanced personal and professional growth. Students work as members of a team that includes attending physicians, residents and students. Each student is expected to perform initial evaluations, supervised procedures, and close follow-up of a limited number of patients.

Emphasis is placed on obtaining comprehensive, organized and efficient patient interviews, performing accurate physical examinations, generating, and modifying an appropriate differential diagnosis, recommending patient-specific, cost-effective and guideline-based diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and performing common procedures while mitigating complication risks, as evidenced by clinical performance, succinct communication in oral presentations, and accurate and timely narrative documentation.

The elective is comprised of experiences across Oishei Children’s Hospital inpatient, ambulatory surgical center and outpatient Conventus Center (1001 Main Street, Floor 3, Buffalo, NY 14203).
