UBMD Psychiatry Services: Medical Student Treatment Program Policies and Procedures

New Patients

  • New patients seeking MD treatment: call 716-835-1246, identify yourself as a medical student, we will take your information, and you will be scheduled with Dr. Adragna or Dr. Haak if appropriate. Sometimes, we may refer you first to one of our therapists.
    • In general, we try to see all students with active psychiatric needs. We will generally not see students who only need to have stable doses of basic medicines continued, as that can typically be managed in a primary care setting. You need to have an active PMD.
    • We generally do not provide letters for accommodations, but will help with necessary referrals when needed.
    • New patients may be seen for assessment for ADHD or continuation of ADHD treatment; however, prior diagnosis and/or treatment does not guarantee that treatment is continued. The diagnostic process can be expected to take three sessions.
  • New patients seeking counseling: call 716-835-1246, identify yourself as a medical student seeking therapy, and we will create a chart for you. After that, call one of the therapists on the school’s website to schedule.
    • Alex Cogswell, PhD: 716-859-5484
    • Erica Kuyoro, LCSW: 716-800-1291
    • Sarah Punturiero, LCSW-R: 716-259-2892

If you are not sure what services you need, give us a call and we will help you determine where to begin!

Coordination of Services

If you see one of our psychiatrists, the general expectation is that you would also see a therapist from our program or from UB Counseling. Exceptions are made for patients on a case-by-case basis, e.g., if you have an established relationship with a local therapist.

Attendance

You may miss (miss = cancel within one full business day, no-show) up to three appointments before having treatment closed within our program.

Out-of-State Rotations

As different states remove COVID-era flexibilities, we no longer conduct appointments with students who are outside New York State, or send prescriptions outside of New York State, although we are typically able to manage this, and always available in emergencies for active patients.
