The goal of this course is to expose students to the decision-making process and surgical management of patients with Head and neck cancer, as well as surgical extirpation, and plastic surgical reconstruction (including microsurgery/free flaps). The student will be able expected to evaluate patients in clinic, interpret head and neck diagnostic imaging, independently assess and provide an operative plan of care, first assist in the operating room, round daily on wards, report to faculty/residents, and attend multidisciplinary meetings related to patient care. Assisting in the operating room will allow students to hone basic suturing and skin closure techniques. Specifically, students will be expected to assist with simple graft harvest, placement, and wound closure. Students will also be exposed to a wide range of general reconstructive plastic surgery including Transgender surgery, reconstruction of orthopedic trauma, breast, and abdominal wall defects.

Students will be integrated in the health care team and work closely with attending surgeons, serving as a sub-intern. This rotation is ideal for students who have an interest in plastic surgery or otolaryngology.

Prerequisite: MS4 or MS3 with successful completion of SUR 700
