Ambulatory Surgery/Anesthesia

This rotation trains you in the typical surgical and anesthesia procedures performed on an outpatient, ambulatory or same-day basis.

You’ll help evaluate presurgical and postoperative patients and assist on multiple ambulatory procedures, including:

  • skin and soft tissue procedures
  • lesion excisions
  • laparoscopic procedures
  • cystoscopic procedures

You’ll become familiar with all levels of anesthesia, including IV narcotics, paralytics, gas-induced anesthesia, spinals and epidurals. You’ll develop competence in adult intubation and maintaining unconscious patients’ airways.

You’ll learn how to:

  • start IVs and CVP lines
  • place Swan-Ganz arterial lines
  • deliver spinal anesthesia
  • intubate at time of surgery
  • perform urinary catheterizations at time of surgery
