Pediatrics

Supervised by a community physician, you’ll gain experience caring for pediatric outpatients as well as some inpatients.

Working in a rural private practice, you’ll learn how to diagnose and treat common medical, surgical and psychosocial conditions in patients from infancy through adolescence.

You’ll administer numerous pediatric physicals, including school physicals. You may also attend home visits.

This rotation complements your first-year pediatric rotations as well as your training in the family medicine center, newborn nursery and on the family medicine inpatient service.

It will deepen your understanding of the family's role in nurturing childhood growth and development.

You’ll learn the following procedures:

  • lumbar puncture
  • intravenous catheter/butterfly insertion
  • foreign body removal
  • arterial/venous blood collection
  • wound debridement
  • burn care and dressing
  • laceration repair
  • tympanogram interpretation
  • suprapubic tap
  • urethral catheterization
  • pneumatic otoscopy
  • audiogram interpretation
  • nasal packing for epistaxis

Conditions Seen

You’ll learn how to diagnose and treat children with conditions including:

  • viral, bacterial, parasitic and rickettsial infections
  • common gastrointestinal disorders
  • apnea
  • cyanosis
  • congenital heart defects
  • rheumatic disease
  • anemia
  • nephritis
  • diabetes
  • thyroid disorders
  • gonadal dysfunction
  • seizures
  • dermatologic concerns
