Behavioral Medicine

The rotation trains you to manage your patients’ mental health conditions and related concerns.

The majority of the rotation occurs in various outpatient settings, starting with the Behavioral Health Team at Universal Primary care where you will focus on the access and care of behavioral health in rural community settings. Working with LCSW's in the family medicine center, you will learn how to interview adolescents and adults with behavioral health concerns and manage their care through behavioral health counseling and integrated team management.

At Olean General Hospital, you’ll diagnose, treat and refer patients with psychiatric disorders and related concerns, such as alcoholism and substance abuse. In addition, you will practice your interview skills with patients in the behavioral health unit and manage their care through behavioral health counseling, group therapy and team approaches, as well as with psychoactive drugs.

You’ll review cases and learn about behavioral health programs available in our area, especially those for children.

You’ll gain competence caring for a broad range of patients with sensitivity to their culture, sexual orientation, personal circumstances and stage of life.
