ICU

You’ll become proficient recognizing and understanding emergent conditions as you admit patients and manage their care in the intensive care unit.

Supervised by faculty intensivists, you’ll admit patients to the ICU, diagnosing their condition and managing their care. You’ll determine the appropriate tests and procedures for specific medical situations and perform a variety of procedures.

This rotation complements the ICU training you’ll receive on the family medicine inpatient service.

Techniques and Procedures Learned

This rotation trains you to interpret tests and procedures, including:

  • electrocardiogram
  • arterial blood gases
  • chest X-ray
  • hemodynamic monitoring
  • respiratory parameters

You’ll demonstrate proficiency conducting:

  • EKGs
  • peripheral IV insertion
  • arterial puncture
  • ABGs
  • ACLS and codes

You’ll understand the indications and contraindications for, and complications of:

  • central line placement
  • thoracentesis
  • paracentesis
  • intubation and ventilation
  • pacemakers
  • emergency cardioversion

Conditions Seen

You’ll identify and manage conditions such as:

  • acute pulmonary edema
  • sepsis
  • shock
  • acute GI bleed
  • respiratory distress with BiPAP therapy
  • acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • drug overdose
  • respiratory distress with ventilator management
  • myocardial infarction
  • coma
  • cerebrovascular accident
