Gastroenterology
You’ll demonstrate competency in evaluating and managing a range of GI disorders during this elective.
Among other skills, you’ll learn how to:
- conduct rectal and pelvic exams
- understand the benefits and risks of GI imaging and diagnostic procedures
- identify, evaluate and manage acute GI bleeding
- gather and interpret the essential information and tests to identify GI infections
- evaluate the symptoms and complications of liver disease
- identify, assess and manage bilary and pancreatic disorders with assistance from the gastroenterologist
Conditions Seen
You’ll become competent assessing and managing such conditions as:
- esophageal disorders
- absorption disorders
- inflammatory bowel disease
- irritable bowel syndrome
- common colorectal diseases
- vascular disorders of the GI system
- acute intestinal obstruction
- acute appendicitis and peritonitis
