Gastroenterology

You’ll demonstrate competency in evaluating and managing a range of GI disorders during this elective.

Among other skills, you’ll learn how to:

  • conduct rectal and pelvic exams
  • understand the benefits and risks of GI imaging and diagnostic procedures
  • identify, evaluate and manage acute GI bleeding
  • gather and interpret the essential information and tests to identify GI infections
  • evaluate the symptoms and complications of liver disease
  • identify, assess and manage bilary and pancreatic disorders with assistance from the gastroenterologist

Conditions Seen

You’ll become competent assessing and managing such conditions as:

  • esophageal disorders
  • absorption disorders
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • common colorectal diseases
  • vascular disorders of the GI system
  • acute intestinal obstruction
  • acute appendicitis and peritonitis
