Rheumatology

You’ll be trained to diagnose and treat a variety of rheumatic diseases, gaining new knowledge about the value of rheumatologic medicine for your patients.

You’ll learn how to manage patients with such rheumatic diseases as:

  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • inflammatory arthritis
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome
  • SLE
  • gout
  • pseudogout
  • vasculitis
  • polymyalgia

You’ll also learn which rheumatic conditions warrant specialist referrals and what information to include in referrals.

You’ll become familiar with the range of blood tests used to help detect arthritis, order the appropriate tests to diagnose rheumatologic problems and interpret the results.

You’ll develop competence in prescribing therapeutic agents for your patients and understand the influence of aging on their care.

Procedures Learned

You’ll develop competence in:

  • examining joint structure and function
  • joint aspiration and synovial fluid analysis
  • therapeutic injections of diarthrodial joints and bursae
  • biopsies of tissue relevant to rheumatic diseases
  • bone and joint imaging techniques
  • measuring bone density
